It kept rebooting the computer and displayed this message: "Configuring Updates Stage 3 of 3" and would go from 0% to 100% before rebooting again. Safe mode offered no help Search for the entry: "Pending.xml identifier" (which will be 2 lines or so after the first one) and delete it. End the Regedit and reboot.

My Vista HPrem laptop downloaded updates from 2/12/2008 and got stuck in a reboot loop. None of the adv. reboot options worked (Safe Mode, etc.) The MS support guy had me boot to my Vista CD, and run startup repair. This process had me "Restore' and after a reboot I was back into my desktop.

If you launch a system volume restore from within Acronis, it reboots and runs it just fine (loads before the OS). Really?
